However, the swords were not ready yet and they did not come into his possession until a year later, when he returned to Japan. Owning a sword was the exclusive privilege of samurai and for Fabius the gift was, therefore, equivalent to being knighted. In 1869, he received a third sword, which is featured on this photo. This time, it is the landowner of Hizen who sent him one by way of thanks for his contribution in setting up the Japanese Navy. It is shorter than the two swords previously presented to Fabius.
