Parishioners who slept during lengthy sermons were a problem for many churches. Some parishes employed a `sluggard-waker', who would walk around the church and tap with a stick anyone found to be asleep. Often this official was also the parish clerk. In Hogarth's scene the parish clerk, seated below the preacher, is clearly awake. However, it is recorded that the clerks themselves sometimes dozed off, too.
