		"Description: IU, un s. on plate b. r. \"Gochotei Sadahiro\"; inscr. on plate t. l. \"Children Playing at the Seven Gods of Good Luck\" (translation); publisher's seal b. r. CRE SADAHIRO, Gochotei ; (Japanese; ) PUB Tenma-ya Kihei (Tenki). This publishing house was active from 1840 - 1850. The two boys in this print are playing at dressing up as two of the seven gods of good luck. The seven lucky gods were associated with the New Year period and were thought to attract peace, happiness and good fortune. The boy to the right carries a votive decorated with a fish design that links him to Ebisu, the Shinto god of merchants, fishermen and farmers. His kimono is decorated with mice suggesting that this print was produced in celebration of the Year of the Rat. The rat is also associated with Daikokuten, another of the seven gods of good luck. The other boy has strapped a small drum to the top of his head so that he resembles Jurojin, the god of longevity (who is usually shown with an elongated head). He is often depicted with other auspicious emblems of longevity such as the crane, an image of which appears on the boy's kite. Kite flying ('takoage') was also associated with the New Year's festivities and became popular amongst children during the Edo period. Kites were symbols of good luck and were thought to lift prayers of good fortune to the gods. The kite is also decorated with branches of pine and the first sun rise of the New Year, both considered auspicious symbols for the coming year." ;
