These displays were sponsored by the restaurants on either side of the river, and wealthy merchants hired pleasure boats on the river for private 'firework viewing' parties. The city of Edo, because of its closely built wooden houses, was very suseptable to the outbreak of fire, and for this reason fireworks were restricted to the Sumida river area.\n Hiroshige was an artist of the Utagawa school of printmakers, and the Japanese characters for 'Utagawa' appear on the lanterns of a popular pleasure boat in the centre of the composition. The dulled colours suggest a scene at night. A technique known as 'bokashizuri' or gradation printing has been used to depict the surface of the water. Similarly, the night sky shows gradations of grey and the orignal printing block was inked in such a way as to create a vertical drag to suggest a heavy night sky." ,
