		"Description: IH, un s. on plate left sheet b. l. and right sheet c. l. \"Kiyonaga ga\". CRE KIYONAGA, Torii; (Japanese; 1752 - 1815) Whistler collection (W 5)\n 2 sheets from a triptych, a hand is visible on left sheet (c. r.) suggesting a third sheet. \n Torii Kiyonaga studied under Torii Kiyomitsu, and was adopted by the Torii School after his teacher's death. In the 1770s Kiyonaga developed a more 'naturalistic' style and he is known for his elegant portrayals of the samurai class enjoying their leisure time. Kiyonaga also produced actor prints and 'shunga' (erotica). \n This print shows 5 women relaxing by an iris pond, one lady sits on a bench smoking a pipe while her companions stand chatting and adjusting their sash belts. Another woman wearing a wide brimmed straw hat fans herself as she watches her friend crouch down to pick an iris. The close colour harmonies that Kiyonaga employs serve to enhance the gracefulness of this scene. The placement of the women and banks of the pond in the foreground against a blank white background in which sky and water merge, suggest that the landscape is floating in space. This abstraction of pictorial space would have appealed to Whistler and the French Impressionists." ;
