CRE KUNIYASU, Ippusai; (Japanese; 1794 - 1834) PUB Matsumura-ya Yahei. This publishing house was active from1730 - 1820. The print depicts a young woman fashionably dressed in a black outer kimono decorated with blossom and grape vines. The colour blue picks out the details of her dress and the ornaments in her hair. Prints that made use of imported Berlin Blue (Prussian Blue) became popular in the 1820s. The top left inset shows a picture of Ebisu, one of the seven gods of good luck, commonly depicted with a fishing rod in his right hand and a sea bream ('tai') under his left arm. During the Edo period Ebisu was worshipped in agricultural areas as the god of fishermen and agriculture while in the city he became known as the patron of small shopkeepers and was believed to bring prosperity to merchants. Ebisu is celebrated on the 20th day of the 10th month in a Shinto festival known as \"Kannazuki\" (month without gods), this was also a holiday for Yoshiwara courtesans." ;
