The Kano School incorporated Chinese stylistic effects and subject matter whereas the Tosa School upheld an indigenous Japanese style and was used to illustrate Japanese narratives. Their choice of subject matter was different, however both schools produced bird and flower paintings ('kacho'). In the mid 19th Century the Maruyama Shijo School became dominant, this was an offshoot of the Maruyama School founded by Maruyama Okyo (1733 - 1795). This new approach to painting synthesized the established Kano and Tosa styles and encouraged a greater degree of realism through the practice of direct observation and the introduction of a European perspective." ,
