CRE KIYONAGA, Torii; (Japanese; 1752 - 1815) Whistler collection (W 3) one sheet from a triptych. \n This print depicts an aristocratic family hawking near Mount Fuji. This was a popular sport amongst the wealthier samurai classes who were in possession of large tracts of land. The print conveys the wealth, elegance and refinement that was traditionally associated with the samurai class. In the scene a woman wearing a long sleeved ('furisode') kimono patterned with purple cranes casually rests a sword ('tanto') against her shoulder. Her companion, a woman on the right, is modestly dressed in a black kimono with floral decorations at the hemline and base of the sleeves. The samurai class were required by law to carry two swords so that their high rank could be distinguished from amongst low ranking commoners. In the print the hawk perches upon the glove of a young nobleman whose sword is clearly visible. The attendant kneeling before him wears a kimono of shot silk that possesses a luxurious wood grain pattern. Prints that combined the auspicious symbols of Mount Fuji, hawks and beauties were extremely popular during the New Year Spring Festival celebrations." ,
